Tip Toolbox: Newly Diagnosed?
Ten Ways to Quickly Become Familiar With Celiac Lifestyle
1. Visit our Food Makers section, and search for companies that make gluten-free (GF) versions of your favorite breads, cakes, pastas and other items. You’ll be relieved to see so many options! Visit their web sites to get familiar with their brand names.
2. Use our On-Line Stores section to visit the sites of some GF online “supermarkets.” Remember to price-shop!
3. Visit a few grocery stores in your area, and ask the manager to lead you to the gluten-free sections.
4. You’ll need guidance to figure out which mainstream food brands are safe and which contain “hidden gluten.” You’ll find providers of such guidance in our GF Safe Lists section.
5. Use the Support Groups search tool in our Links section to find the group closest to your home.
6. Turn to our Books section to search for recommended reading. You’ll find cookbooks and more general books on the celiac lifestyle.
7. Visit some of the online discussion groups recommended by our Forums section. You’ll quickly discover that each group has its own “personality.” Which one fits yours?
8. Dining out when you have celiac disease means being a little pickier about where and what you eat. In our Restaurant Finders section, you’ll find resources to make that effort easier.
9. The GF diet makes traveling more challenging, but don’t let that stop you. Read our Travel Pointers below, and then take a look at the Travel Aides that can make life easier on the road.
10. Once you’re used to living with celiac disease, you might be inclined to start “giving back” to the cause. Take a look at our Advocacy links to see how you can help others with celiac.
